FLIPPING THE SWITCH AT CREEKSIDE

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS ALL LIT UP!

As much as I have lived and learned, it always seems I am out hanging holiday lights in the cold contrary to best intentions.

Several internal voice alarms told me to get out my chords and UNtwist the tree lights during the awesome week of sun and warm temperatures during the week leading up to Thanksgiving.

But free time escaped me. So I set aside the Christmas decorating chores until the day after this year's turkey feast...

And of course, true to tradition, there was a 100% change in the weather on Friday! The frosty morning did not deter Black Friday shoppers, but, MY plan was to hang lights that day. My poor timing left me with a runny red nose and chills, battling bulbs in the bitter, numbing flurries.

I will be more proactive and hang lights earlier next year. It's the same vow I have uttered time and again. I remain determined to see our home glowing with the cheer of being lit for the holidays despite always experiencing frustration during the process of stringing them with stinging fingertips from a steady blast of arctic air.

ONCE I GET THIS ACCOMPLISHED HOWEVER, THE TWINKLE OF THE SEASONAL LIGHTS PUTS ME IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT!

The thought of NOT faithfully illuminating my home never enters my mind!

I love Christmas lights. As a kid, we would get in the car on Christmas Eve and pass the anxious time waiting for Santa to arrive, riding around our neighborhood. We would stop to 'ooh and ahhh' at the most elaborate lighted abodes. We would cast our votes and select winners in our own holiday light contest, which we made up.
These personal memories probably explain why I am still to this day fascinated with the seasonal lighting that comes out at this time of year.

Several nearby neighborhoods decked their town halls this month much to my delight. I jumped on the first chance to get out and enjoyed this years' first holiday lighted sights at Gahanna's community holiday lighting kickoff.

I went to Creekside Park for the presentation sponsored by AEP Ohio® and the City of Gahanna Department of Parks & Recreation. Once the sun began to set all the switches were tripped, a Winter Wonderland appeared right before my eyes.

There were a number of families and their pets parading merrily down the lighted wooded Creekside park path as soon as this happened. I couldn't help notice that I was not the only one there getting all lit up with the holiday spirit.

The fading colors of fall shined vibrant under the glow of hundreds of red and green bulbs. Creekside's signature miniature watermill which is located at the entrance to the park, provided a dazzling double image reflection on the water. It was an inviting scene as I crossed over the bridge at the beginning of this light show journey.

Just around a small curve in the path, there was a group of children busy going about inspecting the postal facility where their lists can be mailed to Santa.

Gahanna's Creekside display includes several mini buildings in an imitation town center where the post office structure stood. Other old time village building facades appeared further up the path and all along the way.

The entire woods twinkled around us. There are thousands of lights hung from branches in every direction as well as overhead. A lighted fox figure peaked out from behind a big tree trunk. There were other creatures we came upon deeper in the woods and stopped to admire them too.

The oversized blinking holiday ornaments and bells stretched across archways brightened our way and the glow of the season radiated as far as I could see.

The Creekside scenery looks even more like a Winter Wonderland under a real blanket of snow. But with or without the white stuff, Gahanna's holiday light display has a spell binding allure. The massive blanketing of the woods with little lighted bulbs turns these surroundings into a holiday postcard-like vision.

As I was walking at Creekside, I began imagining visions of gingerbread in the heads of little people who might live in the little houses out in these woods. I was tempted to take a quick look through some of the windows, to see if there were tiny people snuggled inside in teeny tiny beds.

The town of Gahanna also has one of the merriest holiday parades around Central Ohio. Last weekend's wowing of hometown crowds at the Holiday Lights! Parade was no exception. The final float made good on its promise to bring Old St. Nick to town for a quick visit, before he has to return to the toy making elves.

Other communities have great holiday parades, but, there is something special about what they do in Gahanna. They organize a premiere lighted holiday evening parade! 2012 was the second year the parade returned after a brief hiatus. It featured several enthusiastic bands and lots and lots of equestrian entries again this time.
I am amazed by the horses, both big and small. A few years ago I witnessed more miniature horses in this parade than I have ever seen anywhere else. These precious galloping mares and stallions give me every reason to go back to see Gahanna's parade every year!

The perennial favorite is the Oshkosh Striker Air Rescue Firefighting Truck from the Port Columbus International Airport. , all dressed in thousands of twinkling lights. The Striker's special feature turns up the holiday cheer, when it showers “snowflakes” as it passes the crowds along the parade route.

The end-of-year holidays for me would not be as festive without going out to see holiday lights...I love seeing all the small towns wrapped in lights and feel warm and fuzzy looking at familiar landscapes flickering in seasonal illumination.

It is customary in our household to plan a visit to the Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. We are also regulars at the Alum Creek State Park's Fantasy of Lights. I am already looking forward to this year's pilgrimage to both of these two special places, since I have not made it to either of them yet. Fortunately...there's still plenty of time before years' end!

I hope to see more Holiday lights this year, and, whether it’s sharing a special night cruising around with friends, or, chauffeuring my own family members I will make time during the hustle & bustle of the season to spend quality time enjoying this favorite holiday tradition.  Sure I love decorating holiday cookies and getting surprises from under the tree too. But, there is nothing that gets me in the right mood for the holidays like holiday lights sightseeing does.

The bigger the light show the better. I absorb the energy radiating from these good tidings & I cheer for the displays with the highest voltage ! It always seems to motivate me, to go back home and add a couple hundred more bulbs to my personal blinking beautifications.

Columbus Builds On Lego Cult

LOCAL LEGO MANIA 1stHIT COSI AND NOW THE COLUMBUS ART MUSEUM

Is it LIVE or is it MEMOREX?

That memorable slogan popped into my mind several times along with amazement as I toured two exhibitions featuring LEGOs as the main attraction. It reaffirmed my belief that human ingenuity was made for LEGOs.

If you liked Lincoln Logs and LEGOs as a kid, you’re probably not alone! These building toys are as inspiring today as they ever were. I’m thinking all the things I just saw at both the Columbus Art Museum (CMA) and Center of Science and Industry (COSI), will imprint the brains of hundreds of new followers, big and small, who come to view these highly imaginative ways big and small pieces of plastic were put together.

You HAVE to see these structures, to believe that people can actually build such art-tastic, true-to-life scenes with something called a ‘toy’! One of the exhibit rooms at the art museum has an entire downtown Columbus, Ohio streetscape, which encompasses several blocks of familiar skyscrapers.

Obvious connoisseurs and LEGO fanatics exist right here in Buckeye Central! They have put miraculous talent and energy into construction of ‘forms’ through interlocking hundreds and thousands of these building blocks. It was a privilege to have had a recent opportunity to take in the sights of some really magical LEGO work on display in two of Columbus’ best places for exhibiting creativity.

I had seen a picture on-line previously of the award-winning Ohio Stadium replica made entirely out of LEGOs. Standing a foot away photographing the intricate details of this masterpiece was mind-blowing!

LEGOs are one of those rare ‘toys’ that bring families and multi-generational groups together to enjoy the limitless possibilities of imaginative play. The simplicity of design has a lot to do with LEGOs staying power; it has remained virtually unchanged in design, though, today’s building bricks come in a variety of colors and hundreds of shapes and sizes.

A bucket of LEGOs has different outcomes every time they’re dumped out. Everyone from artists to engineers can relate; and there’s tons of evidence to show what happens when experimentation and critical thinking skills combine with LEGOs!

The fascination with LEGOs that hit our Capital City is part of a worldwide ‘Lego Cult’. Seriously!

Google the word LEGO- you’ll be brought up to speed quickly. Better yet, spend a day at CMA, or, plan a trip to COSI this winter. You will get a life-size lesson and explore why this timeless tinker-toy is loved by all ages.

CMA’s LEGO exhibition is called, Think Outside the Brick: the Creative Art of LEGO, It is a collaboration with the COSI LEGO Castles exhibition. In addition to traveling LEGO displays featured at these two museums, Columbus is showing off its brightest LEGO Building Block Masters through participation in a first-ever LEGO building contest. Contestants were chosen from the following 3 categories.

1.COSI’s Castle Challenge: Create a castle that defends against catapults, battering rams, and dragon attacks.

2. Columbus200 Challenge: Celebrate Columbus’s 200th birthday by using exactly 200 LEGO@ bricks to build an original creation of your choice. It does not need to be Columbus-themed, but it must include exactly 200 LEGO@ pieces.

3. Imagination Challenge: Build a creation that responds to the question, “What does imagination look like?”

The contest separately judged works by individual LEGO® builders ages 6-adult and families or groups of Ohio residents. The finalists are now on display at CMA. Winners will be awarded prizes in January at the exhibit’s conclusion.

CMA’s Center for Creativity designed the contest hoping it would spawn local originality; it delivered such things as a whimsical Taco Truck; and some spectacular sci-fi creatures and tiny caricatures of favorite cartoons, all made entirely out of LEGO® Bricks.

This winter the crowds at COSI & CMA will also get a good look at realism in some surreal LEGO® sculptures, paintings, and multimedia dioramas that literally left me questioning what is real and what is LEGO®-pixelated recreation!

The world's fascination with LEGOs is something I discovered while exploring the Land of LEGO exhibits here in town.

My favorite displays have local roots. The LEGO artwork shared by The Central Ohio LEGO Train Club is a combination of handiwork heralding the gifts of local LEGO architects. They brought to life a crowd-pleasing super-sized display depicting images of our very own downtown, with all the landmarks that were not spared any familiarizing details that I found myself going around the table recognizing with great pleasure!

COSI was first to turn up the heat on LEGO MANIA in Columbus. COSI will be continuing to give visitors hands-on lessons with the tools of this trade in addition to featuring awe-inspiring LEGO works for the rest of the year. Everyone is invited to come explore, build and play in their LEGO® Castle Adventure, which is an assemblage of exhibit areas featured on the first floor.

I personally observed numerous “Wreck-It Ralph" juniors having their way with some of the big LEGO bricks (fortunately these were made of a rubbery material). I also saw young children and elderly adults all equally busy with their hands building things. All in the name of play-time. It is hardly something I would describe as work, except, I saw a lot of works of art that had to have taken hundreds of hours to create so perfection-istically!

What can you do with a brick?

You can find out for yourself at CMA & COSI this winter. Both of these facilities will keep you Thinking Outside the Brick by bringing new things to do with LEGOs every month.

Columbus' has a big LEGO following and it will keep growing this year. LEGO construction curiosity seekers need only visit CMA & COSI for a turn at being turned into master builders! There is a lot to check out, including, a different gallery, theme, and activity offered at each of these two locations on different dates. You can find actual details about these things on their respective websites.

Upcoming weekend activities will feature LEGO entertainment through January 2013. With cooler temperatures outside now, I can't think of a better way to heat up imaginations!

I am guessing the spotlight on LEGOs at these two premier Columbus, Ohio facilities will result in a run on LEGO® products this holiday season?  I have already seen numerous television commercials highlighting new LEGO sets for sale. I noticed the ads right after attending these exhibits with LEGO creations still very vividly on my mind. I know for a fact there will be a bucket under the tree in my home this year!

If you go on-line, you can learn more about some of the Ohio kids who entered their designs of castle life for the local LEGO building contests. Their stories are unique and interesting and reveal the inspiration they get when they turn toy building materials into works of art and fully functioning life-size objects.

SALUTE A VETERAN TODAY & EVERY DAY

STAND UP AND APPLAUD EVERY VETERAN
WHEN YOU SEE ONE
Because freedom Is Worth saluting
I attended a recent star-spangled patriotic event honoring veterans. I am so not a fan of war.
Browsing through personal memorabilia which belonged to military personnel from Ohio, including, uniforms, weapons, photos, maps, etc., left me envisioning the time and place these things had been used.  Imaginary scenes haunted me.  The possessors of these items might never have actually been in any real battles, but, some have and lived to tell about the horrors of war...

The thought of actual combat is frightening to me, to say the least.
Every Veterans Day we Americans pay tribute to our military might and the muscle that makes this country stand free. The evening of remembrance and recognition I attended served up all the red, white, and blue I needed, to rightly overcome the dark and dread-filled thoughts I encountered at this same ceremony.
I was one of the people in a crowd of maybe 200+ who stood at attention in the Grace Polaris Auditorium, alongside dozens of men and women in cleanly pressed uniforms representing each respective division of the military service. It was an overwhelmingly emotional couple of hours filled with music and audio-visual presentations, drama and personal testimonials, and, scrumptious apple pie for dessert which sweetly concluded the services.
I left uplifted; this pumped up my patriotic spirits for another year.
I felt truly honored, honoring those who put their lives on the line. It occurred to me as I sat and listened to several speakers, that tributes to soldiers should not be reduced to a once-a-year showing of support.
For all who fought for our freedom throughout history and every USA soldier who will fight for our country's liberties in the future, we Americans need to stand up and salute every single one of them every time we have an opportunity.
Yes; I mean we should all be doing things like cheering whenever we see a soldier in an airport; proudly paying these individuals tribute by walking up to them and saying 'thanks'; it means a lot to every man and woman who wears an American military service uniform, to know how much this country cares that they do what they do for US to claim our freedoms here in the U.S.!
I dealt with personal glimpses of battlefield bloodshed while the bandstand performed 40s-style toe-tapping music. During this recent pre-veterans day commencement I held my hand on my heart engulfed in thankfulness, as flags were waving.

This event was prepared expertly. It provided a glimpse at over 200 years of American independence through music, media, AND an all-American apple pie reception afterward. It was good to be surrounded by a diverse group of Americans who all stood proudly honoring past veterans and current service personnel, and proclaiming to stand with the military families—those who wait behind and pray for the safe return of their loved ones.
One featured speaker, Major General Deborah A. Ashenhurst, Ohio'sAdjutant General, teared up as she spoke of some of her experiences. She is a member of the Governor's cabinet and is responsible for the command of the Ohio National Guard and the military readiness of the Ohio Militia (more than 17,000 personnel). Her years of enlisted service began in the Ohio National Guard in 1978. She had stories to tell that will bring tears to my eyes evermore in remembrance.

There is more than one way to honor our country's soldiers. Each and every one of them, especially, all those who have fallen fighting for freedom, deserve honor. It’s important to think of them as individuals and comprehend they have taken an oath like none other, which literally puts their country’s protection above their own lives.

Both active and retired soldiers live among us; every veteran you see state-side should be acknowledged for the service they do. Whether they help hurricane victims put lives back together, or, shoot a weapon in fierce battle-torn war zones…do not remain silent when you see them! Even the simplest gesture like a handshake will not be overlooked.
There is every reason to do more, to let the brave from sea to shinny sea know your appreciation. It is the military after all that preserves the lifestyle we live here in America and you and I should thank the establishment of these protective forces every day of our lives.

Don't be shy: Take a stand; Salute any soldier you come in contact with any time you do. They will be pleased. You are bound to feel the unwavering dedication that lies deep in a soldier's soul when eye contact is made and gratitude is voiced. Every one of our soldiers are important to the system that provides each of us greater security in this country!

PS:  I wish to make a special note about some of the pictures used in this blog post.  They are photos of military family members that I obtained from people I consider very special personal friends, the Engleharts & the Loars. God Bless you all and thank you!
